The Legend of Tillie the Goose
In order to understand the whole legend of Tillie it is necessary to give you some background about our gardens and the “goose”.
We now have four flower gardens in the Peaselburg neighborhood. These gardens had very humble beginnings. The first of these spaces was located at 19th & Jefferson and had very few plants when it was first started. After much work and many years we added the other three spaces.
After our FOPNA membership and financial receipts increased we were able to add more plantings to this garden. Some of these plantings came as leftovers from resident’s gardens. Through backing from the City of Covington we were also able to add the three additional gardens. We were also able to add garden materials through Place Matters grants. It should also be noted that the name “peasel” in Peaselburg denotes goose droppings. The name was adopted because the early German immigrants who settled in the area raised many geese who, in turn made droppings.
It was during some of the garden renovations and improvements that someone made the suggestion that, since our name was derived from the legendary goose, it seemed only to be a matter of course that the goose be our mascot. We made the plea, scouted the neighborhood and located an appropriate concrete goose.
During all the time our association has been in existence and for many years before we were even thought of, there was a certain German immigrant who lived on W. 21st. St. who was quietly going about her life. She took exceptional care of her nine children, her husband, her extended family and her property in Peaselburg. This resident’s name was Tillie Schuhmacher. She had that “special touch” when it came to growing things. She also left an everlasting impression on anyone who met her. She did anything she could to improve her neighborhood.
When it came time to give our Garden Goose a name we felt it was only appropriate that she be called “Tillie”. This way each time we pass the garden and see the Garden Goose we will be reminded of one of our most beloved residents.
